Why do Hawaiian Islands move?

The Hawaiian Islands are constantly on the move due to the movement of the Pacific Plate, on which they are situated. The Pacific Plate is slowly drifting northwestward over a hotspot deep within the Earth's mantle called the Hawaiian hotspot. This hotspot is relatively stationary and continuously produces magma that rises to the surface and forms volcanoes. As the Pacific Plate moves over the hotspot, new volcanoes are formed on the southeastern end of the chain, while older volcanoes on the northwestern end gradually erode and subside. This process results in the continuous creation and destruction of Hawaiian Islands over millions of years.

In simpler terms, the Hawaiian Islands are like conveyor belts moving over a stationary heat source. As the islands pass over the hotspot, they undergo various stages of development, from seamounts rising from the ocean floor to active volcanoes and eventually eroding into atolls and reefs. This dynamic process gives the Hawaiian Islands their unique geological features and diverse ecosystems.
