Honolulu to San Diego by Boat? Not a Regular Option
There is no scheduled passenger boat service between Honolulu, Hawaii and San Diego, California. The ~2,600 nautical mile (4,800 km) open-ocean crossing is served exclusively by air.
Why No Ferries/Liners?
- Distance & Time: 5–7 days each way at cruise speed—economically unviable vs. 5.5-hour flight.
- Demand: Tourism and business travel overwhelmingly choose speed.
- Jones Act: U.S.-flagged vessels required for domestic routes—high crewing/operating costs.
- Weather: North Pacific winter storms make year-round reliability difficult.
Exceptions (Freight & Niche)
- Cargo ships: Matson, Pasha Hawaii run weekly container/ro-ro service (5–6 days). No passengers.
- Repositioning Cruises: 1–2x/year, cruise lines move ships between Alaska/Hawaii and California/Mexico seasons. 4–5 day crossings; book via cruise lines.
- Private Yacht: Experienced sailors do the passage (typically May–Sept for favorable trades). 10–14 days.
Bottom line: Fly. Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest, United, Delta, Alaska, American all fly HNL–SAN nonstop daily.
