Maui is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 miles (1,609 km) west-southwest of San Francisco, California. It is the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, after the island of Hawaii, and is part of the state of Hawaii. Maui is located at the center of the archipelago and is surrounded by the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.
