The Funkiest Hotels in Bali

Bali has grown up a great deal since its long-ago years as an undiscovered tourist destination frequented largely by Australian university students. As such, funky hotels in Bali are becoming fewer and farther between as hammock-strung huts are replaced by places with air conditioning and 300-thread-count sheets. But there are still a few to be found, luckily, especially in the Kuta and Legian areas in the south. Even after all the changes to the Bali landscape, one thing remains the same: if you want to find a funky hotel, follow the Australians.
  1. The Island

    • The Island Hotel is tucked away down an alley off of Legian Beach, just a quick stroll away from the thumping nightclub scene at Double 6 Beach. Crowned with a rooftop garden and boasting a purpose-built yoga studio, it's perfect for the traveler who wants to balance funk with comfort. There's an infinity pool, Wi-Fi, a cafe and available in-room massage. For backpackers who really enjoy the community feel of dorm-style accommodation, there are dorm beds available (however, they're not much cheaper than a private room).

    The Bounty Hotel

    • The Bounty Hotel caters to, by its own description, "enthusiastic party maniacs." The hotel is a stone's throw from vibrant Kuta beach, and it seems to always be thumping with house music. The grounds are extraordinarily social, with plenty of in-house events, movie nights, and hot-tubbing. The sunken poolside bar never seems to slow down. In-room massage services help to work out the kinks from participating in the never-ending party, and there's a very helpful tour desk when your liver begs you to leave the grounds for the day.

    Poppies Bali

    • Poppies Bali is situated just off Poppies Road in the always-funky Kuta Beach neighborhood and provides a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle outside. The rooms aren't just rooms but detached thatch-roofed huts, connected to each other and the common areas by red brick footpaths that meander through fragrant tropical gardens and waterfalls. The whole facility is shaded by the canopy of an ancient coconut grove. It's not all peace and quiet, though: each hut is equipped with an MP3-ready audio system for those wishing to rock out in private.
