Sumatra: Indonesia's Largest Island Has No Capital City

Sumatra does not have a capital city. This often surprises people because Sumatra is:

  • Indonesia's largest island (473,481 km² / 182,812 mi²)
  • The world's 6th largest island
  • Home to over 58 million people (2021 estimate)

Why No Capital?

Sumatra is an island, not a political entity. It's one of ~17,500 islands comprising the Republic of Indonesia. Administrative capitals exist at the national and provincial levels:

  • National capital: Jakarta (on Java island)
  • Provincial capitals on Sumatra:
    • Aceh: Banda Aceh
    • North Sumatra: Medan
    • West Sumatra: Padang
    • Riau: Pekanbaru
    • Jambi: Jambi City
    • South Sumatra: Palembang
    • Bengkulu: Bengkulu City
    • Lampung: Bandar Lampung
    • Bangka Belitung: Pangkal Pinang
    • Riau Islands: Tanjung Pinang (off Sumatra's coast)

Key Distinction

Islands don't have capitals—countries, states, and provinces do. Sumatra's size and population exceed many sovereign nations, but administratively it's divided into ten Indonesian provinces, each with its own capital.
