Cape Horn: Where the Pacific & Atlantic Meet at South America's Tip

The Southernmost Cape

Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos) on Hornos Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago (Chile) is the southernmost headland where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans meet.

Significance

  • Historic sailing route (clipper route) before Panama Canal.
  • Notorious for extreme winds, waves, icebergs – "sailors' graveyard."
  • Part of Cabo de Hornos National Park; UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
  • Chilean Navy station; lighthouse; albatross monument.

Not to be confused with Cape Agulhas (Africa) – the true dividing line of the oceans per IHO.
