Why was Taiwan named Formosa?

Taiwan wasn't named by Formosa. In Portuguese, Formosa means "beautiful,” and Portuguese sailors and explorers applied the name to Taiwan in 1593. The island retained that name until the 18th century, before it became formally known as Taiwan. Today, the island is occasionally called or referred to as Formosa, in informal settings and contexts, and usually by people outside Taiwan.
