Who found California?

The Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is generally credited with being the first European to set foot on what is now the U.S. state of California. Cabrillo led an expedition up the Pacific Coast of North America in 1542 and landed at what is now San Diego Bay on September 28. He named the land California, after a mythical island mentioned in a 16th-century Spanish novel called "Las Sergas de Esplandián."
