How could early explorers be sure that the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic were two different bodies of water?

The early explorers did not immediately establish that the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean were separate bodies of water. It was only after extensive exploration and mapping of the Americas that their distinct nature became evident.
