Only Two Oceans Meet at India's Southern Tip—Not Three

At **Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari)**, the southernmost point of mainland India, **two** oceanic bodies meet—not three.

The Two Waters

  • Indian Ocean (to the south/southwest)
  • Arabian Sea (to the west/northwest)

The **Bay of Bengal** (east) meets the Indian Ocean further north, near Sri Lanka/Indonesia—not at Kanyakumari.

The Confluence Experience

At Kanyakumari, you can see distinct water colours (turquoise Arabian Sea vs. deeper blue Indian Ocean) and a visible mixing line—especially at sunset. It's a major pilgrimage and tourist site (Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue).

Why "Three Oceans" Is a Myth

  • Oceanographic classification: Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are **marginal seas** of the Indian Ocean.
  • No third distinct oceanic body reaches the cape.
  • Popular but inaccurate claim.

So: **Indian Ocean + Arabian Sea = 2**. The Bay of Bengal is nearby but not at the tip.
