The Two Sovereign Nations of the British Isles
The British Isles (archipelago: Great Britain, Ireland, +6,000 smaller islands) contain exactly two sovereign states:
1. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
- Composition: England, Scotland, Wales (Great Britain) + Northern Ireland
- Capital: London
- Population: ~67M (2024)
- Status: Unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy
- International: UN Security Council permanent member, NATO, G7, Commonwealth
2. Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann)
- Composition: 26 counties (5/6 of Ireland island)
- Capital: Dublin
- Population: ~5.3M (2024)
- Status: Unitary parliamentary republic
- International: EU member, Eurozone, UN, OECD, Commonwealth (left 1949)
Not Countries (But Often Confused)
- Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey: Crown Dependencies (self-governing, UK responsible for defense/foreign affairs). Not sovereign.
- Overseas Territories (14): e.g., Gibraltar, Falklands, Bermuda — UK sovereignty, not part of British Isles geographically.
Terminology Note
"British Isles" is a geographic term. Some in Ireland prefer "Britain and Ireland" or "Atlantic Archipelago" due to political connotations. The two sovereign states cooperate via British-Irish Council, Common Travel Area, Good Friday Agreement institutions.
