Determine where you will be moving. Often times when people move across the country it is to pursue education or career. Do research to determine the best place to live in relation to your job and/or school. If you have children, be cognizant of the available schools in the area. Next, you should figure out how you will transport your items across the country. If you choose to use a moving company, find one with a good reputation for transporting over long distances.
Get rid of old or unwanted items that you do not want to take with you. When you move across a long distance, it is best to only take with your most valued possessions with you because transporting a large amount of items can be both time-consuming and costly. Donate unwanted items to charity or have a yard sale to make a little extra cash for your move.
Organize items you will take with you and pack. Being organized will prevent you from misplacing items during the move. It will also make unpacking easier.
Make an arrival plan. Make a tentative schedule for the day of your arrival and the following few days at your new destination. Though you may not keep exactly to this schedule, it will be helpful in creating structure for unpacking and getting settle at your new place. Call ahead to schedule for your utilities, phone, and cable to be turned on the day of or soon after arriving.
