Book bus tickets online or on the phone. Choose the schedule with as few transfers as possible. Transfers require passengers to switch buses and wait for a layover period. Write down the booking confirmation number and keep it in a safe place.
Pack valuables in a carry-on bag, because checked bags are often lost or stolen. Make sure checked bags are easily identifiable, so they're less likely to be lost during travel. Pack food, water and something to read on the bus. Buses are often cold, so wear warm clothing. If traveling at night, bring a blanket and a pillow.
Arrive at the station early to pick up tickets. Bring identification and the confirmation number. Find out from the ticket agent exactly what time the bus leaves and what door it leaves from. Also find out if and when passengers will have to transfer buses or stop for layovers.
Recognize that people will usually leave their luggage in a line in front of the door to the bus. Leave luggage in this line so you can get on the bus early, but keep it in sight at all times. On the bus, choose a seat as close to the front as possible. If there are any problems, alert the bus driver.
Find out in advance when and where the bus will be arriving. Bus stations often are not in safe areas, so it's important to know how to get from the station to the final destination (e.g. taxi, local bus or walking). If possible, choose a bus that arrives in the daytime.
