How to Take a Literary Tour of Britain

Home to many great writers, England is a country where you can take an extensive literary tour. Personally choosing where you want to explore and about whom you want to research may be more preferable than finding an established tour guide company and taking a pre-mapped tour. By familiarizing yourself with Britain, you can easily blend in with the locals and appreciate where the authors took time to write.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify your favorite British authors. Some of interest may include Jane Austen, the Brontê sisters, H.G. Wells, George Elliot, Lewis Carrol, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

    • 2

Research where each author was born, where each author wrote and about where they wrote. Many of Jane Austen's books were set in East Devon, while The Brontê sisters were born and raised in Haworth, Yorkshire. H.G. Wells made London his home towards the end of his life. Agatha Christie, born in Torquay, frequented South Devon to write her novels. Finally, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous "The Hound of Baskervilles" took place in South Devon.

    • 3

Plan which areas you want to visit. London is a logical start location not just because of the many writers who lived and worked there, but also because of its major airports. You should plan your trip in a circular pattern so that you start and finish in London, minimizing air fare.

    • 4

Book a flight to England. Tourism generally booms in the summer months because the weather tends to be better. If the weather is no bother to you, then find a cheaper flight during the off-season, which starts in October and ends in March.

    • 5

Book hostels, hotels or bed and breakfasts in each area you wish to visit. Choose ones with high ratings and rave reviews, easily researched online.

    • 6

Book your transportation needs as necessary. If you plan on visiting England and driving, booking a car ahead of time will ease the stress of traveling. Also, if you choose to go by train or bus, you should book these in advance as well.
