Languages Spoken in Moray, Scotland

Moray (northeast Scotland) primarily uses two languages:

• English – Universal in education, government, media, commerce, daily life
• Scots – Germanic sister language to English; distinct vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation. Spoken informally, especially by older generations and in rural communities

Scottish Gaelic is historically absent from Moray (unlike Highlands/Western Isles). The 2011 Census recorded <1% Gaelic speakers in Moray.

Scots in Moray features Doric dialect traits: "fit" (what), "quine" (girl), "loon" (boy), "braw" (fine), distinct vowel shifts. It's recognized under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
