New England's 2020 Election: A Uniform Blue Wall in a Polarized Nation
Six States, One Outcome: Biden Sweeps New England
In the 2020 presidential election, every New England state—Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont—voted for Joe Biden, continuing a decades-long Democratic streak in the region.

Structural Drivers of the Blue Lean
- Highest educational attainment: 42%+ bachelor's degree (US avg: 33%). Strong correlation with Democratic voting since 2000.
- Secular / religiously diverse: Low white evangelical %; high "nones," Catholic, mainline Protestant, Jewish, Muslim populations.
- Urbanized & suburbanized: Boston, Providence, Portland, Manchester metros dominate; rural areas sparse.
- Immigrant gateways: Boston, Providence, Stamford attract diverse, Democratic-leaning newcomers.
- Social liberalism legacy: First to legalize same-sex marriage (MA 2004), strong gun laws, climate policy, reproductive rights.
- Institutional density: 100+ colleges/universities → knowledge-economy workforce, student voters.
Nuances & Exceptions
- Maine's 2nd District (rural, working-class, older) voted Trump 2016/2020—only New England EV for GOP.
- New Hampshire is most competitive (swung 2000, 2016 close); libertarian streak, low taxes, border-state dynamics.
- Down-ballot splitting: GOP governors elected recently in MA (Baker), VT (Scott), NH (Sununu)—fiscal moderates, social liberals.
2024 Outlook
Demographic trends (aging, diversification, educational polarization) favor continued Democratic dominance at presidential level, but ticket-splitting persists. The "Blue Wall" holds—but with distinct New England mortar.
