What happened in east London 1888?

The Jack the Ripper serial murders took place in east London, during the second half of 1888. At least five women were brutally murdered and mutilated in the Whitechapel district. The killings sparked enormous public fear and the subsequent police investigation became one of the most famous in criminal history. Despite extensive efforts, the identity of Jack the Ripper remains unknown.
