Construction of the London Bridge

London Bridge spans the River Thames, connecting Southwark, on the river's southern side, with the city of London on the north. The current Bridge dates to the 1970s.
  1. History

    • The earliest known bridge in the area dates to the Roman times, almost 2,000 years ago. A bridge designed by engineer John Rennie in the 1820s replaced a medieval-era stone bridge.

    Replacement Bridge

    • Rennie's bridge sank slowly into the mud of the river, and in the 1960s the architects John Mowlam & Co. designed a replacement. The British Government sold Rennie's bridge to Robert McCullough of Arizona.

    Construction

    • The new bridge is hollow and made from concrete, which meant that it could be constructed over the old bridge. Traffic could still cross the river throughout the construction process.

    Deconstruction

    • Meanwhile, the old bridge was carefully deconstructed. Workmen systematically numbered each stone so the bridge could be reassembled in its new home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
