Birmingham Nightclubs

With more than one university and a young population, Birmingham--located in the English midlands and the country's second largest city after London--has a vibrant nightlife scene. Whether you are looking for an exclusive club experience or want to dance the night away in the middle of a crowd, your desires will be satisfied in Birmingham.
  1. Gatecrasher

    • Gatecrasher was voted best Birmingham nightclub in the government-supported 2010 Best Bar None Awards. It has three main rooms, with the largest--known as the Main Room--capable of accommodating 1,450 people under its 14-foot disco ball. Each room promotes a different kind of clubbing experience: the Mansion Room aims for an escapist atmosphere, while the 180-capacity Arkade emphasizes intimacy. Depending on the event, you'll hear many different types of music at Gatecrasher, from house, trance and electro to R&B and alternative; all rooms come equipped with state-of-the-art sound systems. Gatecrasher brings some of the U.K.'s top DJs to Birmingham. Many regular club nights have ticket reductions for students.

    Mechu

    • The emphasis at Mechu is very much on exclusivity. Although the ground floor offers a bar that is open to everyone, the floor above is a small nightclub which boasts Dom Perignon by Night status and attracts VIPs. The interior is decorated in 1960s style and offers a luxurious clubbing experience. All this, however, comes with a price tag: as of September 2010, hiring a private booth at Mechu had a minimum spend of £250 (around $390).

    Oceana

    • Oceana--an $8.5 million nightclub--boasts no less than seven themed rooms. Each takes its inspiration from a different country, allowing guests to travel the clubbing world in one evening. For example, Wakyama Tokyo is a Japanese concept bar playing techno and upbeat dance remixes. The New York Disco room comes complete with a colorful light-up dancefloor and a mixture of party hits from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The Reykjavik Ice House, meanwhile, styles itself as "the future of clubbing" with a high-clarity sound system and a huge 360-degree video wall overlooking the dancefloor.
