Why is it color in America and England?

In America, the word "color" is used to refer to a single hue or shade while the word "colour" is used in England. Some argue this is due to British English being closer to medieval French, however, the main cause is actually a simple spelling reform in Noah Webster's first American dictionary that changed many spellings in American English based on how they were pronounced.
