English Heritage Events

English Heritage is an organization that strives to protect historical landmarks and protect sites of national importance. Throughout the year, English Heritage hosts open days at some 400 cultural attractions all over England. Admission is free on designated open days, and the events are entirely volunteer-run. English Heritage events are the largest and most popular in the country with about 11 million visitors each year.
  1. Clare College, Cambridge

    • Clare College, Cambridge is a part of the Cambridge University system and the second oldest surviving college in the university, dating from 1326. Famously liberal and artistic, with world renowned choirs and publications, English Heritage hosts an open day at Clare with guided walks of the campus. Situated on the banks of the River Cam, guests tour the College Chapel, Fellows Library and the Great Hall. Visitors to Clare will also get a peek at the famous Scholars Garden and Fellow Garden, rarely available to the public.

    Christ Church, Oxford

    • Christ Church is a constituent college of Oxford University. Established in 1546 and with an alumni list including William Penn, Lewis Carroll, Edward VII of the United Kingdom and 13 British Prime Ministers, Christ Church is a historically exclusive college. English Heritage Open Days provides a free guided tour of the Dining Hall and a historical tour of the building focusing on hospitality and traditions of the college.

    Nunnington Hall, York

    • York is a stunning Roman city in northern England and one of the best preserved heritage sites in the UK. English Heritage Open Days hosts guided tours to many sites in York, but the most famous is Nunnington Hall. This country manor house was home to the Dr. Robert Huicke who tended to three monarchs: Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Elizabeth I. Dr. Huicke also famously gave the news to Catherine Parr, sixth wife to Henry VIII that she would never bear children. The Stone Hall is the oldest part of Nunnington Hall, dating from the 1500s, and the property sits on eight acres including walled gardens, orchards, meadows and peacocks.
