Why is Scotland yard not in Scotland?

Scotland Yard is actually located in London, England, and not in Scotland. Its name originates from the location of the Metropolitan Police's headquarters in the early 19th century, which was on a street called Great Scotland Yard. The name "Scotland Yard" became synonymous with the Metropolitan Police and has been retained despite several relocations.
