Why did Washington decided to go Virginia instead of attacking the british in NYC?

George Washington did not decide to go to Virginia instead of attacking the British in New York City. In fact, he initiated a campaign to take New York from the British in the summer of 1776, resulting in the Battle of Long Island. However, after suffering heavy losses in this battle, Washington retreated from Long Island and ultimately decided to withdraw his troops from New York City.
