If a naturalised British citizen has been absent from the UK for more than 5 years, they may lose their citizenship if they do not intend to return to the UK. This is known as the "5 year rule".
There are some exceptions to the 5 year rule. For example, a naturalised British citizen will not lose their citizenship if they are:
- Working for the UK government or an international organisation
- Studying abroad
- Serving in the armed forces
- Incapacitated due to illness or disability
If a naturalised British citizen is not sure whether they will lose their citizenship if they stay out of the UK for more than 5 years, they should contact the Home Office.
