The Murray-Darling Basin: Australia's Riverine Lifeline

The Rivers

Covers NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, ACT. 30,000+ wetlands. 35 endangered species. 30+ Aboriginal nations (Barkindji, Ngarrindjeri, Wiradjuri, etc.) — 65,000+ years stewardship.

Water Uses

• Irrigation: 70% diversions (rice, cotton, citrus, grapes, almonds, dairy).
• Town supply: Adelaide (50%+), Canberra, regional centers.
• Environment: Environmental water holdings (CEWH) — 2,000+ GL for wetlands, fish breeding, red gum forests.
• Recreation/Tourism: Houseboats, fishing, birding, cultural tourism.

Crisis & Reform

Millennium Drought (1997-2009) exposed overallocation. Water Act 2007 → Murray-Darling Basin Plan (2012): 2,750 GL/yr recovery for environment (later +450 GL efficiency). $13B investment. Controversial: buybacks vs. efficiency projects, socioeconomic impacts, compliance failures, climate change not fully priced in.

Current State

2022-23 floods: temporary relief. Long-term: declining inflows (-11% since 1990s), rising demand, salinity, blue-green algae, fish kills (Menindee 2018-19, 2023). First Nations water rights emerging.
