Legend has it that King Charles II was the first to order that there be six ravens at all times at the Tower of London in the 17th century. He is said to have made this decree in response to a prophecy that if the ravens ever left, the Tower and the British monarchy would fall. The Tower of London never went unguarded, and even during World War II, at least one raven remained on duty.
The Tower ravens are all descendants of the original six ravens that were brought to the Tower in the 17th century. They are kept in a large cage called the Ravenmaster's House and are cared for by a full-time Ravenmaster. The ravens are fed a diet of raw meat, including chicken, pheasant, and rabbit, and are also given a variety of treats such as fruit and nuts.
