How Many "Places" Exist in the United States?

The United States comprises a complex political geography beyond just the 50 states:

  • 50 States
  • 1 Federal District: Washington, D.C.
  • 5 Major Unincorporated Territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands
  • 11 Minor Unincorporated Territories: Including Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Atoll, Navassa Island, Palmyra Atoll, Wake Island, and others.
  • 326 Federally Recognized Indian Reservations (sovereign tribal nations within U.S. borders)

"Place" definitions vary by context (census-designated places, incorporated cities, etc.), but the above reflects the primary sovereign and administrative divisions.
