Six States Directly Affected by the 9/11 Attacks

The September 11, 2001 attacks had immediate, physical impacts on six U.S. jurisdictions:

1. New York: World Trade Center destroyed; 2,753 killed at the Twin Towers. Epicenter of the tragedy.
2. Virginia: American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon in Arlington; 184 killed.
3. Pennsylvania: United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville (Somerset County) after passenger revolt; 40 passengers/crew + 4 hijackers killed.
