Before Saint Paul, Minnesota Territory's capital was Saint Anthony—a riverfront settlement on the Mississippi's east bank, now absorbed into northeast Minneapolis.

Why the Move?

Saint Paul's superior steamboat landing, central location for territorial delegates, and growing commercial clout made it the practical choice. Saint Anthony's legacy lives in the Saint Anthony Falls (only major waterfall on the Mississippi) and the historic Saint Anthony Main district.
