Time Difference: Las Vegas (PT) vs. New York City (ET) — Always 3 Hours

Planning a call, flight, or TV watch party between the Strip and the Big Apple? The time gap is simple but has seasonal nuance.

The Constant

  • Las Vegas, Nevada: Pacific Time (PT) — UTC-8 (PST) / UTC-7 (PDT)
  • New York City, NY: Eastern Time (ET) — UTC-5 (EST) / UTC-4 (EDT)
  • Difference: 3 hours year-round

Examples

New York (ET)Las Vegas (PT)Period
12:00 PM (noon)9:00 AMStandard Time (Nov–Mar)
12:00 PM (noon)9:00 AMDaylight Time (Mar–Nov)
9:00 PM (primetime)6:00 PMBoth periods
3:00 AM (late show)12:00 AM (midnight)Both periods

Why It's Always 3 Hours

Both zones observe Daylight Saving Time on the same schedule (2nd Sunday March → 1st Sunday November). The 3-hour geographic offset (15° longitude per hour × 3 = 45°) is preserved.

Practical Tips

  • Flights: LAS→JFK "loses" 3 hours + 5 hr flight = arrive 8 hrs later body time. JFK→LAS "gains" 3 hrs — arrive near departure time.
  • Markets: NYSE opens 9:30 AM ET = 6:30 AM PT (brutal for West Coast traders).
  • Sports: NFL Sunday 1 PM ET = 10 AM PT (early tailgate). MNF 8:15 PM ET = 5:15 PM PT (perfect).
  • TV: Live events (Oscars, debates) air simultaneously — 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT.

Exception: Arizona

Most of AZ (including Phoenix) stays on MST (UTC-7) year-round. In summer, Vegas (PDT) and Phoenix (MST) are same time. In winter, Vegas (PST) is 1 hr behind Phoenix.

For Vegas–NYC, just remember: New York is always 3 hours ahead.
