The Missouri Compromise: Statehood and Slavery Balance

The core problem was slavery. Missouri sought admission as a slave state; Maine as a free state. Admitting both would upset the Senate's slave/free balance. The resulting Missouri Compromise (1820) admitted both but banned slavery north of 36°30′ in the Louisiana Purchase territory.
