The Gadsden Purchase was an agreement between the United States and Mexico, finalized in 1853, in which the United States agreed to pay Mexico $10 million for a 29,670-square-mile (76,800 km2) tract of land in present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico. The land acquired in the Gadsden Purchase was seen as necessary for the construction of a transcontinental railroad.
