Streets
The most common type of street in Chicago is simply called a "street." Streets typically run east-west.
Avenues
Avenues are similar to streets, but they typically run north-south.
Boulevards
Boulevards are wide, landscaped streets that are often found in parks or along the lakefront.
Places
Places are small, private streets that are often found in residential areas.
Roads
Roads are typically located outside of the city limits.
In addition to these general categories, there are also a number of other types of streets in Chicago, such as courts, drives, lanes, and terraces. The name of a street is often determined by its location and historical development. For example, streets that are located in older parts of the city are often named after prominent local figures or events. Streets that are located in newer parts of the city are often given more generic names, such as "First Street" or "Second Avenue."
