Haunted Houses That Are Open to the Public in San Antonio

San Antonio is haunted by more than the legends of men like James Bowie, William B. Travis and Davy Crockett in their famous fight to defend the Alamo. From that terrible battlefield, to quiet corners hidden away in a dark theater, to the basement of a historical hotel, tales of ghostly sightings in San Antonio just won't die. Tour the haunted sites with a group, or take them on alone -- if you dare.

  1. The Alamo Battlegrounds

    • Fought in 1836, the Battle of the Alamo produced a high number of causalities, from a few hundred to 2,000, depending on the source you turn to. Most of these deaths were of Mexican soldiers. Local legend has it that the grounds are haunted to this day by those who fought for both sides in this battle of the Texas Revolution. There are rumors of deceased monks from the Mission San Antonio de Valero walking the grounds to protect the church. Even the plaza in the center of San Antonio is said to be haunted, as it was previously the location of the area's burial grounds. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds of these haunted locations year round.

The Alamo Street Restaurant and Theater

    • Located along the River Walk in the historical district of San Antonio, the Alamo Street Restaurant and Theater is among several haunted spots in town. There are two main spirits that are said to be active in the place: Margaret Gething and Eddie. Margaret was an actress in the early years of the 1900s who died in the 1970s, but reportedly appears at the theatre in white Victorian attire when rehearsals are taking place. Eddie is a young boy who has been seen in the kitchen of the restaurant. He moves around objects and plays pranks like any other normal boy. Contact the Alamo Street Restaurant for tickets and reservations.

The St. Anthony Hotel at the Plaza

    • Located near the Alamo battlegrounds, the St. Anthony Hotel is haunted by unidentified spirits. Specific sightings or "feelings" of being followed have occurred on the 10th floor and in the basement by the locker rooms. Employees have seen doors open by themselves, and state that apparitions have been seen on numerous occasions by guests that stay at the hotel. Reservations to stay at the St. Anthony and try to see ghosts for yourself can be made on their website or by calling the hotel directly.
