Why is the DC at end of Washington?

The "DC" in "Washington, DC" stands for "District of Columbia." It's not at the end of the name-it's actually in the middle. Washington, DC is the capital of the United States and is located on the east coast of the country. The city is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States, and the District of Columbia is named after Christopher Columbus.
