Though educational activities can include reading books at home or working on activity books while sitting on a blanket in the sunshine, more organized activities in Greenbelt can add variety to the mix. The Greenbelt Museum is one venue suitable for children to experience an assortment of fun and learning-based activities. From walking through the museum and looking at the exhibits to participating in events, the museum can be visited many times over. Some of the structured activities geared toward children at the museum include organized tours and seed-planting activities.
Greenbelt Park, part of the U.S. National Park Service, is located right in the heart of Greenbelt. One activity made available at the park, and suitable for preschoolers, is to go camping. Whether camping for just the day or staying overnight, the natural surroundings will keep little ones entertained as they explore the grounds and look at trees, plants and animals. The park also offers plenty of open areas for picnics, picnic tables for doing outdoor crafts, and plenty of walking paths to take nature hikes.
Greenbelt is home to many paved walkways, sidewalks and nature trails -- ideal for getting young ones out and active. Additional physical activities throughout the area include tennis lessons and clubs through the Greenbelt Tennis Association and an assortment of sport-specific camps hosted by the City of Greenbelt's Department of Recreation. The Department of Recreation has camps for preschoolers, such as Kinder Camp, which keeps kids busy throughout the summer via field trips, swimming activities and art projects. The Greenbelt Aquatic and Fitness Center is also an option to get children active. The City of Greenbelt maintains playgrounds throughout the area, at both schools and public parks, where kids can get out and run around, swing and slide the day away.
Throughout the year, Greenbelt hosts an assortment of festivals and events, most of which have a little something to offer for all ages, preschoolers included. The Greenbelt Green Man Festival is held in May and features child-friendly activities such as Maypole dancing, face painting, hands-on arts and crafts, plenty of food vendors, and live music performed by both bands and strolling performers. For music lovers, The Greenbelt Concert Band puts on performances throughout the year where children can learn to appreciate live music.
