What Activities Are at the Loch Norman Highland Games?

Hunterville, North Carolina, plays host to the Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games (ruralhillscottishfestivals.net) annually in April. Organized by the Catawaba Valley Scottish Society on land settled in 1760, the site is also home to the Amazing Maize Maze in September and October, Rural Hill Sheep Dog Trials in November and First Footin' on New Year's Day. During the Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Normal Highland Games, there are several cultural and sports activities to entertain a wide range of interests.
  1. Competitions

    • The Loch Norman Highland Games include competitions in Highland dancing, piping and drumming, and Scottish athletics. During the 2011 Games, sporting events included long bow, harp, heavy stone lift and carry, and battle axe throw. Other events include competitions for women, such as the Haggis hurl, broom toss, sheep toss and a tattie and spoon race. Harp and fiddling competitions also take place for novice and experienced artists.

    Entertainment

    • Scottish country dancing and Celtic entertainment, including mass pipe band performances, are held alongside competitive events. In 2011, musical entertainers included American Celtic group Jiggernaut, Celtic rock band Rathkeltair, fiddler John Taylor, folk music duo Men of Worth, Bluegrass artist Scooter Muse and Celtic vocalist Jil Chambless. Demonstrations also take place, which in 2011 included sheep herding, a Ferguson rifle demonstration, a single malt Whiskey seminar, a Scottish harp workshop and dancing lessons.

    Shopping

    • A number of vendors participate in the festival, providing Scottish- and Celtic-themed goods. Demonstrations are also held on Scottish artwork and crafts. Scottish clans erect tents for visitors to learn about each clan and trace their roots to see if they are related to some of Scotland's most famous citizens, including William Wallace. The grounds also host a food and drink area, where among other foods visitors can sample Haggis.

    Children's Activities

    • During the three-day Loch Norman Highland Games, children between the ages of 6 and 12 can enter in competitions. Events include shot put-style Clachneart, hammer throw, weight throw and tug-o-war. For the 2011 Games children competed in three age brackets: 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 13. Other attractions and activities for children include a climbing wall, beat the goalkeeper game, battle axe throwing and face painting.
