Jacksonville, Florida, located along the St. Johns River, offers a myriad of recreational activities for its residents and visitors. People of all ages can participate in different kinds of activities, from sports and camps to classes and lessons. Jacksonville, known for being a winter resort, is also a place where these activities and countless more are offered throughout the year.
  1. Camps

    • During summer, kids ages four to 17 can join different kinds of camps, including aquatic camps, arts and creative camps, enrichment and life skills camps, sports and fitness camps, teen camps and toddler camps. Some of the camp activities include surfing, photography, field trips, tennis and nutritional workshops. Three summer camp sessions are held from June to July. These are full-day, two-week camps that take place Monday through Friday.

    Sports

    • Adult athletics during the summer, winter and spring include softball leagues and tournaments, a flag football league and wheelchair basketball. During spring, basketball, racquetball and table tennis are also offered. Adults can also join a softball league during fall.

      Youth sports during the summer, winter and spring are baseball, softball, flag football, and football and spirit, where kids participate in football and spirit/cheerleading. During winter and spring, kids can join the youth basketball league or participate in structured tennis activities. Baseball and softball leagues are also formed in the fall.

      Games are played in various parks throughout the city.

    Programs

    • Health and fitness programs are offered throughout summer, including open volleyball, bingo, senior dance, senior fitness and youth karate. Activities such as free-weight training, free weights, and stretching and basic aerobics are also offered as well as Zumba, senior coffee time and taekwondo.

      During winter and spring, preschoolers can participate in arts and crafts class and preschool fitness. Martial arts classes are offered for kids ages three to 12. Kids and teens ages six to 17 can join after-school sports programs including flag football, basketball, bound ball and pillo pollo. Teens ages 12 to 17 can join the book and chess clubs. Youth art programs include beginning drawing and after-school art. Young adult/teen hip hop classes are offered too. Basketball, indoor games, dance, music and poetry can be enjoyed in the program "Teen Warehouse," which takes place in different centers throughout the year. Adults can partake of karate, keyboard class, bingo, senior cinema, and knitting and basket weaving. Adult art programs include clay, painting and drawing, and ceramics.

      Programs are offered in different community centers throughout the city.

    Aquatics

    • Summer, winter and spring aquatic activities include open swim, family swim and swimming lessons for kids and adults. "Stroke Clinic" is for kids and teens ages five to 17 who want to improve their stroke techniques. Swim teams are formed during summer as well. Adults can also take aqua aerobics classes.

      Winter and spring aquatic activities are lifeguard training for those at least 15 years of age and attending or participating in the annual "JaxParks Swim Classic," a regional competition for kids ages five to 17.

      Aquatic activities take place in over 30 pools throughout the city.
