Pioneering Europeans entered the limestone valleys of Appalachia just after the American Revolution to gain possession of the rich farmlands found in Mercer and Tazewell counties. The discovery of coal made these areas boom with industry and commercial activity. Soon railroads were built and towns' populations swelled. Coal extraction had a severe impact on the land formation in the surrounding area. The unusual sandstone formation known as Pinnacle Rock inspired a conservation movement to protect the rock. In 1938, the Conservation Commission purchased 26 acres of land surrounding the rock and opened Pinnacle Rock State Park soon afterwards.
Pinnacle rock reaches 3,100 feet above sea level. It's located along route 52, in Mercer county, near Bramwell. The unique sandstone formation draws in thousands of tourists each year. Picnic areas, trail systems, paved walkways and parking areas have been built by the Works Progress Administration over the years to accommodate the large amount of attention the rock receives. The original 26-acre conservation area around Pinnacle Rock has expanded to include over 400 acres of protected land, which includes the seasonal popular trout fishing spot, Jimmy Lewis Lake.
Pinnacle Rock State Park features a picnic shelter that seats up to 75 people. It can be reserved up to a year in advance. The large stone shelter has an immense central fire pit making it a great place for family events. Throughout Pinnacle Rock State Park there are several designated picnic areas with large tables and grills. Furthermore, a large playground facility has been built to accommodate for younger children. In addition, great year-round fishing is available at Jimmy Lewis Lake. However, if you plan to fish, a fishing license is required.
There is a great deal of hiking opportunities in Pinnacle Rock State Park. The most popular route takes the hiker up Pinnacle Rock and rewards her with a spectacular scenic view. The high-elevation view is highly photogenic and provides a great opportunity for photographers. Besides this popular route there are dozens of trail loops for both hikers and mountain bikers to explore. The trail systems join Pinnacle Rock and Jimmy Lewis Lake. They're perfect for day use and offer enough diverse terrain and challenge to keep people busy.
