What Kind of Information Is on a Passport?

A passport is issued to authorize international travel. When in other countries, a person can use their passport as a form of identification. Since the passport is used for identification, it contains such personal information as the owner's full name, date of birth, place of birth, gender and nationality. Passports also contain a photo of the owner for quick identification.

- The United States issues blue passports to all regular civilians. Congresspeople and other officials who travel overseas are issued official passports that are maroon.

- In 2004, the United States initiated the development of biometric passports. These passports contain chips that hold digital photographs and identifying information on the owner.

- Passports contain sensitive information about one's identity and should be carefully guarded. Stolen passports can be used for identity theft.
