If you properly use your Passport Services Information Card, if you lose your passport, you will have the necessary information--number and expiration date--to report it to the U.S. Department of State and have it renewed.
The Passport Services Information Card also lists important contact information for when you are traveling inside or outside the United States.
It will be easier to get a new passport if you make two copies of it before you leave on your trip, according to the USAA Educational Foundation. Leave one copy at home, it advises, with a trusted person. Take the second copy with you, but keep it separate from your passport.
The Passport Services Information Card is different from another wallet-sized card, called a U.S. Passport Card. The U.S. Passport Card can be used to reenter the United States at land borders or sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, according to the U.S. Department of State.
The state department recommends a valid U.S. passport for citizens with family living abroad, those thinking about an international vacation and those whose job could require international travel.
