What Size Should Passport Photos Be?

A passport is a type of travel document that provides proof of identity and citizenship and contains a photograph of the passport holder. Passports are required when traveling abroad, and travelers must have a valid passport to re-enter their own country when they return home. Some countries also require a special permit called a visa in order to enter. Both passports and visas require that two identical photographs be submitted with each application.
  1. Size Requirements

    • All passport photographs must be 2 inches by 2 inches square. Visa photographs must also be 2 by 2 inches square.

    Professional Photographs

    • Many photography studios, drug stores, post offices, libraries and some passport application centers provide passport photography services. Prices vary and the services can provide multiple copies at the same time.

    Self-Produced Photographs

    • With a digital camera and a color printer, you can take and print passport photographs yourself, but you must be sure to comply with all passport photo requirements.

    Requirements

    • A passport photograph must be recent (taken within the last six months) and be of your head and shoulders, with a natural facial expression. The head in the photo should measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from top of the head to the bottom of the chin. The background must be blank and light in color. The subject cannot wear any type of hat or head covering and clothing should be simple.

    Multiple Copies

    • Many people keep extra passport photographs on hand for additional visa applications they may need in the near future.
