What Is a Limited Passport?

United States passports are issued to citizens and non-citizen nationals. Passports are issued by the U.S. Department of State. Limited passports are issued by the same organization and are subject to the same requirements.
  1. Requirements

    • A limited passport is any passport issued with less than full 10-year validity to individuals 16 years and older and less than 5-year validity for individuals under the age of 16. Passports can be issued with limited validity due to a person's lack of citizenship evidence, multiple losses of passports, and passports lost or stolen while overseas. Passports limited in validity because of multiple losses are not extended.

    Request Form

    • To process your request for a limited passport, you must send in a Service Request Form with the following documents: International Passport & Visa Authorization Letter; a current and valid U.S. passport; the Application for a U.S. Passport: Name Change, Data Correction and Limited Passport Replacement; two recent U.S. standard passport-size photographs; and proof of upcoming travel. If you wish to expedite the application, include a check or money order payable to the U.S Department of State. Be sure to mark "Expedite" on the outside of the envelope.

    Important Notes

    • Fill out the forms with a black ink pen and write legibly; illegible applications will delay the application process.

It is strongly recommended that you send all important documents using a traceable delivery service. To protect the contents of the package, mail your documents and application in a secure envelope.
