What Kind of a Service Is Registered Mail?

There are occasions when you have to mail an item or package that is valuable or irreplaceable or otherwise needs to be transported under secure conditions. The United States Postal Service offers the registered mail service that provides more protection than other mail receives while the item is being transported to its destination.
  1. Insurance

    • Registered mail rate provides insurance for any package that is worth up to $25,000, which is in contrast to regular mail, for which you can buy insurance for packages that are worth only up to $5,000.

    Confirmations

    • With delivery confirmation services, you can call by telephone or look online to get the date and time your package was delivered and the zip code to which it was delivered. If the mail carrier attempts delivery and the item cannot be delivered, you can find out the attempted time and date, too.

Signature confirmations will tell you who signed for the package, show the signature, and give the date and time of its delivery or attempted delivery.

    Return Receipts

    • The post office attaches a green return receipt to the package to accompany it as it travels. It is signed and torn off the package when it is delivered so that it can be returned to the shipper in the form of a postcard. The information from the postcard can also be accessed in the form of a PDF attachment to an email sent by the post office.

    Collection on Delivery

    • There are occasions when you may want the recipient to pay for the contents of the package or for the postage or for both. The mail carrier will collect cash or a personal check at the time of delivery. This service is abbreviated COD.

    Restricted Delivery

    • If you want your mail to be delivered into the hands of only one specific person, purchase the restricted delivery service. The only exceptions for delivery to someone other than the intended recipient is when permission is given in writing by the recipient for another person to accept the package, or if the person is a minor, it may be delivered to parents or guardians.

    Prices

    • When using registered mail, you have to declare the value of your package. The postage rates increase incrementally with the value of the item. The cost to ship items that are worth over $1 million can be thousands of dollars to send by registered mail, but can only be insured for a maximum $25,000.
