How Can I Ship a Harp Overseas?

Shipping a delicate instrument overseas requires some preparation and knowledge of key principles of international shipping. There are only two ways of getting something shipped overseas: By air or by sea. Musical instruments are shipped via ocean to buyers all over the world. Traveling musicians, on the other hand, are more likely to ship their instruments by air, as there are time considerations. A highly valuable item may require shipping by air to lessen the chances of loss or damage potentially obtained during a longer voyage. Single odd-sized items require special packaging and handling procedures.

Assemble your packing material to package the harp. Keep the strings of the harp taut as this make the harp more resilient to bumps. Use polystyrene foam blocking on the corners and secure with tape. Make these blocks as wide or even a little wider than the harp as these areas will receive most of the bumps during travel. Wrap the entire harp in bubble wrap using more tape to keep it in place. Make or find a cardboard box to fit the prepackaged harp. Use at least two layers of cardboard all around and use lots of tape to secure the lid section of the box. Secure the integrity of the box even further by using staples along the seams.

Get estimates from several freight forwarding companies. Before you call them you will have to take down the dimensions of the packaged harp. Also calculate the volume of the package and actual weight. Freight forwarders will require this information to determine the cost of your shipment. Decide exactly how you want the shipment picked up and delivered and under what terms. Compare the rates and choose a carrier. Work with a freight agent assigned to your shipment. This agent will track its progress from pick-up until arrival at destination. The agent will also ensure that you have all the necessary documentation required to ship the item overseas.

Prepare to supply all the necessary documentation to the shipper. Double check your measurements and weight. Gather any extra documentation that may be required such as a certificate of origin, a packing list, a letter of credit for payment purposes, an invoice, insurance certificate and customs clearance information. Ask your shipper about any restrictions or other concerns you may have regarding your shipment. Make arrangements for pick up and final delivery at the point of destination.

Keep in touch with your agent to track the progress of your shipment.
