How to Ship Your Goods Overseas

Shipping goods overseas involves different guidelines and procedures than shipping products domestically. Internationally, the goods may change hands as often as six times, and requirements must be satisfied to accommodate the various modes of transportation. The package must conform to government regulations and pass customs in order to officially arrive in the country. Export documents are needed to accompany the shipped goods. Regardless of all that is required, once you are familiar with the process, preparing goods for international shipment can be quite simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a reliable and trustworthy freight forwarder to coordinate the move of the goods from one country to another. Ask about import requirement of the destination country to avoid any shipping problems.

    • 2

Package the goods in strong, sturdy boxes so they can withstand the length of transportation. Make sure there is sufficient padding to support and stabilize the items to prevent them from damage. Wrap the box and seams with shipping tape as added support and reinforcement.

    • 3

Attach the address labels on multiple sides of the box, clearly stating the origin and destination's address. Waterproof the label by covering it with clear shipping tape. Include this label inside the box as well, in case the exterior label gets dislodged.

    • 4

Organize and complete the necessary paperwork for export. This may include a commercial invoice, packing list, shipper's export declaration and certificate of origin. Each country has its own requirements, so check with the shipping company beforehand to clarify the required documents. Signed copies of these paperwork will be given to the importer recipient, as well as any agents involved with the transportation process.

    • 5

Decide whether you would like to purchase insurance for the shipped goods. Verify the cost with the shipping company, but on average, it may cost anywhere from 20 to 25 cents per $100 of declared value. So depending on the items that you ship, insurance may or may not be a practical solution.

    • 6

Deliver all packaged goods and necessary documents to the freight forwarder or shipping company to prepare for international shipment. Be sure to follow up with the status of the shipment to make sure everything is going according to plan and there are no complications or delays.

    • 7

Communicate with the receiving end and indicate the estimated time of arrival of the shipment. Make sure the recipients have copies of all export documents and tracking information once the package has shipped so they can also track the progress.
