How to Catch a Taxi

Whether you've been walking all day and your feet are aching, you've got too much luggage to take the subway, or you're caught suddenly in the rain, there are plenty of reasons to catch a taxi. Hailing a taxi can be intimidating if you aren't used to it, especially when traffic is heavy and there are other people standing on the same corner trying to flag down a ride. Self-confidence and a sense of assurance go a long way when you're trying to catch a cab.

Stand on a corner or along the sidewalk in a spot where you can easily be seen by passing cars. Wait on the side of the street with traffic going in the direction you're headed if possible. This strategy will save you money and time since the driver does not have to go around the block to drive the other way.

Look at the signs on top of nearby taxis. The sign will be lit up if the driver is available to take passengers. If the sign is not lit, it means the driver already has a passenger. In some cities, such as New York, the words "off duty" will be lit up if the driver is not taking passengers.

    • 3

Step a little out toward the street, being careful of traffic, and raise your arm up high once you see a cab that is available. This shows the driver that you are looking for a taxi. You also can wave your arm to get the cabbie's attention.

Enter the cab on the curb side of the street once it pulls over to you. Tell the driver where you're going and buckle up for the ride.
