The Best Places for Crabbing at the New Jersey Shore

Crabbing in New Jersey is a popular summer activity. Crabs may be caught with hard lines, manually operated collapsible traps or scoop nets without a license. The species of crab in New Jersey is called the blue crab because of its blue, green and red body. In New Jersey, there are a number of places to rent a boat or net and bait crabs along the shore.
  1. Barnegat Bay

    • There are several locations to crab along the shore in the Barnegat Bay area. The Barnegat Light Yacht Basin has boating, fishing, crabbing and charters. Locals also recommend going between Seaside Heights docks, which is also known as Cranberry Inlet, between Lavallette and Seaside. According to blogs such as New Jersey Leisure Guide and Scott's Bait & Tackle, locals say you can catch two to three dozen crabs with the right weather and time of day.

    Little Egg Harbor

    • At Great Bay Boulevard at Seven Bridges Road in Little Egg Harbor, there is a pedestrian walkway where locals go crabbing along the banks. The best location is along the banks of the second and third bridges, according to New Jersey Leisure Guide. Not far, in Mays Landing on Somers Point Road in Egg Harbor Township, is an area where you can park your car and wade through tall grass meadows where there is water and crabbing.

    Good Luck Point in Bayville

    • Good Luck Point in Bayville, just a little south of the Seaside Bridge in Ocean Gate, is supposed to be a great spot for crabbing, according to About New Jersey, Scott's Bait & Tackle and New Jersey Leisure Guide. Not far from there at Berkeley Island County Park in Bayville is another crabbing spot with a playground for kids and a beach with a lifeguard.

Bass River Bridge Area, New Gretna

    • Under the parkway and Route 9 Bridge is a spot for those looking for some larger crabs. Scott's Bait & Tackle and New Jersey Leisure caution to watch for holes when you are driving along the road here. Hit the spot at high tide to catch the large crabs. As the tide becomes lower, crabs will become smaller and fewer.
