The Best Places to Catch Crabs in Southeast Texas

Catching crabs can be a fun activity for all ages and requires very little equipment. With nothing more than a string, a chicken neck and a net, it isn't difficult to catch crabs along the coast in Southeast Texas. There are many good places for crabbing, but before trying at any location, make sure to get any necessary permits and read all applicable state regulations.
  1. Copano Bay State Pier

    • Located 5 miles north of Rockport, Texas, the Copano Bay State Pier offers year-round crabbing and fishing. Restrooms are available, and there are concession buildings with supplies for sale. Copano Bay pier is open 24-hours a day year-round. Permits are required for fishing and crabbing. The area is also popular for swimming and boating.

    Mustang Island State Park

    • Near Mustang Island State Park, located just south of Port Aransas, is a salt flat considered to be a good place for crabbing. In fact, the island's first inhabitants depended on shellfish such as crabs for food. Keep vehicles off the soft sand to avoid getting stuck. Other activities in the area include swimming, hiking, surfing and more.

    Galveston State Park

    • Although it was damaged by hurricane Ike in 2008, Galveston Island State Park, located in the city of Galveston, still offers crabbing opportunities. The bay side of the park is best for crabbing.

    • There are places to catch crabs all along the Texas coast. Look for good crab habitat in places such as fishing piers and boat docks. Make sure to get permission from landowners before catching crabs on private property.
