Fun Places for Kids in Macon, Georgia

Macon is home to plenty of places for kids and families to have fun and learn something at the same time. Nearby its downtown area and beyond are museums, special events and historic places where children can connect with historic events and educational topics while having fun with their families.

  1. Museums

    • Macon is home to more than a dozen museums, and several are entertaining for kids. The Georgia Children’s Museum offers several attractions for children of all ages to learn about news mediums, international countries, reading, arts and crafts and other topics through hands-on activities and visual displays. It also holds special events and is available for birthday parties. The Museum of Arts and Sciences features arts exhibits, a planetarium, a mini zoo, educational tours and special children's activities.

    State Attractions

    • The state of Georgia features a couple of attractions in downtown Macon. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame presents visitors with some of the state’s most notable athletes in the areas of baseball, basketball, football, the Olympic games and even NASCAR. Aside from sharing historic facts about Georgia’s involvement in sports, the museum also allows guests to practice their hoops shot, score a touchdown and even simulate driving a racing car. At the Georgia Music Hall of Fame guests can tour exhibits, and kids especially might enjoy Music In Kids Education events each Saturday.

    Historic Places

    • For mostly older kids who enjoy learning about the past and visiting historic places, Macon has several spots to visit. Just outside of town, the Ocmulgee National Monument honors Native Americans and others who have lived in the area for the past 17,000 years. Kids ages 2 and older can be part of the Junior Ranger Program and participate in workshops during the summer. At the antebellum Cannonball House, students in prekindergarten through 12th grades can participate in special tours that teach about geography, the Civil War and architecture.

    Festivals

    • In the warmer months, Macon becomes home to outdoor music and arts festivals, which tend to feature kids activities like crafts, music and petting zoos. In late March, the International Cherry Blossom Festival features International foods and crafts, music and special events for all ages. Over the summer, the Georgia State Fair offers carnival rides and foods, and Bragg Jam brings area music and arts to downtown Macon, as well as special events for kids like a magic show and performances by special musical and movement groups.
